Wenham MA real estate attracts buyers who wish to settle down in a historic part of the Boston North Shore area. Wenham originally settled in 1635 and incorporated in 1643 has retained much of its historic character and rural scenery. A walk along Wenham’s lovely main street provides a timeless picture of beautiful old homes, gardens and yards.
Wenham was the first town to be set off from Salem and the name means “home on the moor”. Since many of its early settlers came from Suffolk County in England it’s presumed to be named after the towns of Great Wenham and Little Wenham.
The Wenham church was formed in 1644 and is prominent in downtown Wenham along with the newer Veteran’s Memorial. The Wenham Tea House and the Wenham Museum, have their roots in the Wenham Village Improvement Society. The Wenham Historical Association and Museum became independent from the Village Improvement Society and underwent a major renovation and expansion in 1997.
Wenham is closely tied to its neighboring town, Hamilton, sharing a school system, modern library, recreation department, and a weekly newspaper. There is a beach at the end of Pleasant Street in Wenham that can also be accessed via a path from Lake Drive in Hamilton.
Although there are no commuter stations within town, both the Hamilton-Wenham station and North Beverly station are very close by. The communities of Hamilton and Wenham have been listed among the “Best Places to Live” by Boston Magazine.
Wenham features nearly 300 acres of parks, playgrounds and recreational lands. It is also home to Gordon College.
