Hamilton sits in the eastern central portion of Essex County and was first settled in 1638 originally a section of Ipswich known as “The Hamlet”. The first recorded land grant in the Hamlet was Matthew Whipple’s farm. Three years later the new stagecoach road (Bay Road) from Boston to Newburyport was laid out through the Whipple land. Other early settlers of the Hamlet, including the Appletons, Lamsons, and Dodges, were attracted by this countryside so similar to the English farms and estates they had left behind. The town was incorporated in 1793, and named for Alexander Hamilton, whose portrait became the town seal in 1903.
There is no manufacturing industry or industrially-zoned land in Hamilton, although there is plenty of open land and horses. In fact you may need to share secondary roads with horse and pony riders. The U.S. Equestrian team was formerly housed in Hamilton and Myopia Hunt Club holds frequent horse shows and events including a Thanksgiving Day fox hunt as well as afternoon polo games many Sunday afternoons. There is a memorial park to George S. Patton in town that has ball fields and creative children’s play areas and the Hamilton-Wenham Community House sponsors free concerts in the park Sunday evenings all summer long. Everything is within a short walking distance including the train to Boston, shopping, and several quality restaurants.
